If you are unfamiliar with the term target market, that may explain why your business is not thriving at the level it should be. To simplify the concept, you wouldn’t want to market a toy commercial to single adults aged 35-85. You also probably wouldn’t want to market feminine hygiene products to men.

The concept of marketing to a specific group based on personal preferences, wants and needs is referred to as a target market, meaning the audience that your product and/or service is intended for. Target audiences are important because you do not want to waste resources marketing to individuals who statistically won’t be interested in what you have to offer.

Once you have established a target market, you can adjust your marketing to better target your specific audience. For example, an older audience may be on Facebook more, whereas a younger audience may be on Twitter more.

When you are targeting individuals that match up with your company, you will find that you will see much more growth. When you are targeting your right audience, you will have better data on potential clients and their needs.

Now you may be wondering how to figure out who your target audience is. Here are a few steps to gathering information on your business’s target audience:

  1. Use any analytics you have access to. This can be analytics from social media accounts, google analytics, etc. What’s great about these analytics is that they will tell you things like age ranges, geographic locations and most active times online on those sites.
  1. Conduct user surveys. If you have an email list or IG account, you can send out surveys or post polls frequently to assess your users needs and wants.
  1. Use common sense about the medical field to help you assess your target audience. For example, you might not want to spend too much time marketing breast augmentation to women over age 70 or men for that matter. Use statistics and common sense relevant to your particular medical field to help you define your market.
